This was my second year shooting the KeyBank Vermont City Marathon for RunVermont. The weather this year was perfect and the photo opportunities were endless. There were plenty of smiles and laughs from seeing the runners who dressed in costume, spectators with funny signs, kids cheering on their parents, and the parade of cute dogs!
There were also moments that brought tears -like the five Vermont Guardsmen who ran to honor American service men and women, and the two female runners who provided inspiration as they ran the course, each with the use of only one leg. I choked up when I saw the “Team Zeke” relay team, who ran to pay tribute to Zeke Kassel, the 16-year-old CVU student who died this past winter in a car accident on his way to school. (Zeke, I hope your spirit could feel the love!)
My marathon coverage ended at 10:45 however, as I needed to get to Southern Vermont for a wedding, so the talented Jennifer Kiewit (who is my second shooter at many weddings) covered for me for the rest of the day and made some great pictures to complete the narrative. Below is a slideshow that incorporates both our work and recaps the fun and emotion of the day:
