PATH June Institute: Music Is the Key

karen pike photography vermont photographer

karen pike photography vermont photographer
I spent an amazing week photographing the Wellness Leadership conference in Stratton last week for the Vermont Education Health Innitiative (VEHI) and it was a picture mecca! VEHI is the awesome organization that does all the wellness, disease prevention and health education for the Vermont School community, making sure that everyone stays healthy- from our teachers to the bus drivers, from members of the school board to our schools’ cafeteria workers.

karen pike photography vermont photographer
So, every June, VEHI’s PATH Program (Planned Action Toward Health) assembles health ambassadors from schools around the state to spend a week at wellness leadership camp, so that they can return to their school districts and pass on all of the great knowledge they gained while away.

This year’s theme was “Music is the Key” and it definitely was the key the having a good time. Below is a 12 minute slide show (to some fun and appropriate music, of course) recapping the jam-packed three days of activities and fun. (The slideshow is in FLASH, so you wont be able to see it on your IPAD, so definitely go find a computer to watch it because it will definitely make you smile)

If you’d like to see hundreds more pictures from the VEHI Leadership week, please visit my Facebook Page or the PATH Facebook page and check out the full album of images.

Thanks,VEHI, for taking me out of my daily comfort zone and allowing me to “make beautiful music” with you all!

Dennis and Mike’s New Year’s Day wedding

karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer

karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer

Dennis and Mike called me on the morning of December 31 and asked me if I was free the following afternoon, New Year’s Day, to photograph their wedding– a celebration that they decided on, choreographed and executed in less than a week.

karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer

I first met the couple last summer, where they were guests at another wedding I photographed. They were already talking then about “when they get married…” so I wasn’t surprised to get the call. I was amused, though, that they chose to jump in and start the year off by share their vows, with only days to plan the event. Dennis said that he wanted to make sure that Mike would always remember their anniversary date!

karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer

The wedding was held at the Williston Federated Church and was attended by about a dozen close friends and Mike’s two sons.
The ceremony was officiated by Rev. Joan Newton O’Gorman.

karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer

After the lovely 15-minute service, guests toasted the new couple with Sparkling cider and ate yummy Red Velvet cupcakes from Burlington’s My Little Cupcake.

Here’s a 4-minute slideshow, recapping Mike and Dennis‘s smile-filled, love-filled day with family and friends. The soundtrack is one of favorite Billy Joel songs, “You’re My Home,” and the lyrics are perfect for this beautiful couple. (This slideshow is in FLASH, so you may need to switch from your iPad to a laptop in order to watch it):

Happy New Year and Congratulations, Mike and Dennis– May you always feed each other’s souls!

Emma L’s Bat Mitzvah

karen pike photography vermont photographer

karen pike photography vermont photographer

Emma is the third Lieberman B’nai Mitzvah I have photographed over the past decade and I cannot get over how beautiful and bright and talented she has become. I was practically in tears as she chanted her Torah portion on the day of her portrait session. I mean, Emma was just a peanut when I first met her at her brother Andrew’s Bar Mitzvah and now, before me, stood this lovely 13-year-old girl who appeared ready to take on the world!

karen pike photography vermont photographer

Of course, she is still the “baby sister” to her big brothers and I loved watching the three kids–and her parents– all goof around and laugh together. Mitch and Bethany definitely both know how to play and have fun, and the “apples”, as they say, don’t fall far from the tree!

Check out the socks on the guys…

The evening reception was held at the Barn at Lang Farm in Essex and catered by the A-MA-ZING Cloud 9 Caterers. The decor was gorgeous, the food was mouth watering.

karen pike photography vermont photographer

I loved all of the little details, and especially the desert table, which included cake pops and mini cupcakes, cotton candy, single serving bottles of milk (with straws!) and a never-ending supply of color coordinated and specially monogrammed m&m’s. YUM!

karen pike photography vermont photographer

And what’s a party without a photo booth? So, Green Mountain PhotoBooth was set up to capture the fun! The props, I should add, were supplied by Bethany and it was the best variety of novelty props I’ve ever seen!

karen pike photography vermont photographer

karen pike photography vermont photographer

There were many special moments throughout the night, but certainly one of the highlights was the dancing of the HORA and lifting the Bat Mitzvah up in a chair while family and friends cheered her on.

karen pike photography vermont photographer

DJ Mike from Supersounds kept the party fun and festive all night with great music, limbo and favorite games like “Coke-Pepsi” and Musical Chairs…

Andrea and Kerry’s wedding

karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer

Ohio couple Kerry and Andrea were married this month at the Courtyard Marriott and it was a destination event for them and their 40 guests.

karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer

I met Andrea and Kerry exactly one year earlier, when they were in Vermont to scout their wedding and set up all of the details for their celebration. Then, it was back to Michigan for the long tax season (Andrea is an accountant!)

karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer

So, I was excited to see them both again and witness how all of their planning had come together. Of course, everything was perfect!

karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer

From their gorgeous ketuba to all of the Fall decorations and details, the couple put so much of themselves into the event and it definitely showed.

karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer

karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer

One really nice touch was that the canopy for the wedding Chuppah (like an arch) incorporated the talit (Jewish prayer shawls) belonging to Andrea’s grandfathers. Very cool!

karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer

The “Jew-ISH” ceremony (as Andreea called it) was officiated by the wonderful JP Kathryn Blume and included traditional hebrew blessings and breaking the glass at the the conclusion of the service.

so sweet…

KAkaren pike photography vermont wedding photographerWED_181516 copy

There was one unexpected turn for Andrea, when her mother’s health declined and she was unable to attend the wedding. So, the couple did the next best thing: they skyped the wedding ceremony and most of the reception from an IPAD and Andrea’s mom was able to “attend” via satellite from her hospital room!

karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer
Guests, throughout the day, visited with Andrea’s mother on the iPad and I know how happy it made the family, and especially the couple, that they could still share their celebration with her. It really made me smile! I especially loved watching Andrea’s father most of the day as he carried around the iPad like his date!

Chris and Christine are engaged!

karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer

karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer

Chris and Christine are getting married next July and I recently took them and their sweet little dog to Clifford Pond in Starksboro for an an engagement session.

karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer

Clifford Pond is a magical place and a perfect location to do romantic portraits. I love bringing couples there for the first time and I always hope that they will find it as special as I do. So, on this perfect Fall afternoon, I encouraged Chris and Christine to bring along a blanket, some wine and cheese and just to breath in the beauty of their surroundings.

karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer

And they did.

karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer

And their dog was very grateful to be there, too!

karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer

I’m really looking forward to photographing Chris and Christine’s wedding next summer in Jay Peak, another gorgeous location that just adds to their magic!

karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer

I hope you enjoy this slideshow recapping the gorgeous afternoon at Clifford Pond….

Kelsey and Jevin

karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer

karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer
Kelsey and Jevin are getting married next summer and this E session was a gift from Kelsey’s mom. The couple grew up in Vermont and they are high school sweethearts. Since they dont get home very often, they really wanted the location of their engagement pictures to represent some of what’s special about Vermont. We decided on Shelburne Orhards and Shelburne Farms. I mean, you can’t get more special than that!

karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer

We had a ball at the Orchard, ate cider donuts and all left with a bag of crisp, tart McCouns and Macs. Then, it was on to Shelburne Farms to visit the animals and enjoy the peak color of foliage season.

karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer

The day wasn’t complete, until we found some remaining hay bales to play on….
karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer

It was a really nice afternoon and I hope Kelsey and Jevin love their pictures as much as I do. Here’s a fun recap of their E session, accomplanied by an old favorite of mine, “Happy Together” by the Turtles.:

Kate and Jan

karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer

karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer

It was truly a storybook wedding for Kate and Jan, who were married August 10 at Shelburne Farms, at the home of Kate’s dad and step mom. The sun was shining, cello music filled the air (talented friends of the bridal couple) and guests were greeted with cold lemonade as they made their way to the ceremony site facing Lake Champlain and the Adirondack Mountains. Even some ducklings paddled in to watch the event.

karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer

Both Kate and Jan are concert violinists living in Los Angeles, and many of their musician friends flew to Vermont to be part of the celebration. On top of that, Jan is from the Netherlands so his best man, his sister and her husband had to hop the pond to get here! So, needless to say, it was an eclectic group of talented and fascinating people in attendance.

karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer

Still, the most important guest at the wedding was Kate and Jan’s love child, a 9-lb Chihuahua/Jack Russell rescue with a very big personality!

karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer

Dutch wedding trivia: the first bridal shower took place in Holland in the 16th century. When a father would not produce a dowry to recognize his daughter’s engagement, villagers got together and showered the couple with gifts to help them set up housekeeping.

karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer

I wish I had the opportunity to spend more time with Kate and Jan prior to their celebration. I only met them two days prior to the wedding, where we snuck in a small E session, just so I could get a feel for how best to photograph them. Of course, they are both gorgeous, so it really wasn’t hard to capture their beauty, both separately and together!

karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer

I’m not sure what’s prettier- the bride or the staircase!
karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer

Picture Perfect setting…
karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer

What a stunning couple!!!
karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer

It was a beautiful ceremony (though a bit bright!) and I love when an “international” wedding includes some element or tradition in the wedding that comes from the other country. For Kate and Jan, this was a wine-drinking custom at the end of the ceremony, introduced by Jan’s sister (though I’m still not clear of the significance, Jan and Kate seemed to enjoy it!).

karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer

karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer

karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer

A joyous and love-filled reception followed the ceremony, with yummy food by Catering by Dale and rockin’ music provided by Daren Cassani from Top Hat Entertainment. Of course, there were also wonderful performances by several of the talented classical musicians. Why not? I had a “team” of almost 20 photographers shoot my wedding, all friends in the business who wanted to do for me what they did best!

karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer

Loads of smiles.
karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer

Lots of hugs.

Friends.

karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer

Words really can’t do this wedding justice, so I invite you to sit back for the next 8 minutes, listen to some gorgeous music and watch this slideshow that recaps what a wonderful and memorable day it was for all. (music: “Beethoven’s 5 Secrets” performed by The Piano Guys and Sara Bareilles singing “I choose You” off her latest amazing disc “The Blessed Unrest”)

Katie and Lauren’s Weddiing!

karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer

karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer
Lauren and Katie, married last month at the OLD LANTERN in Charlotte, are so cute together that they should have their own UNI-NAME-like “Branjelina” and “Beniffer”. I hereby dubb them “Katren” (or maybe “Lautie”)

karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer

One of my favorite parts of a wedding, is when the couple gets that first look at each other in their bridal clothes. Whether each has seen their partner’s outfit before that day or not, it’s a WHOLE different thing to view it ON their betrothed and ON the wedding day!

karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer

Katie wore a gorgeous strapless champagne-colored gown and completed the look with fun and unconventional accessories– Her basketball-themed shoes were custom made TOMS (an homage to Lauren), her bouquet of white roses was made from wood (as were all of the other bouquets and boutonnieres) and her purse was, if you can believe it, a Rubber Chicken! So perfect, and SO Katie!

karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer

Lauren looked sharp in her black slacks and vest over a champagne blouse, but the most special part of her outfit was a pin made by Katie, showing a picture of Lauren’s deceased mother. And when Katie gave this to Lauren, the tears started flowing (from me, too!)

karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer

There were so many wonderful little touches, from the candy table to all of cute banners hanging to the personalized menu board and seating chart. It filled the room with warmth and charm.

karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer

OK, this was too funny…

karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer
The ceremony, officiated by JP Greg Trulson, had special significance, as the wedding came just 2 days after the Supreme Court ruled to overturn DOMA. So, for Katie and Lauren, their wedding would not only be legal in Vermont but will also be recognized on a federal level!! Wahoo!!!!!!

karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer
karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer

The reception was F-U-N!!! Everyone had such a great time, the food was amazing (thank you Chef Roland Gaujac!!!!), and there was so much joy and laughter, that if its essence could just be bottled, it could bring peace to the middle east!

karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer

Yum? Hmmm…
karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer
karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer

Oh, you just never know where that wedding Gnome will show up next…

karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer

Yup, we love our “mobile photo booth”:

karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer

I had so much fun shooting this wedding with Jennifer Kiewit, my awesome co-pilot: so much so, that it has taken me over two weeks to get through all of our pictures and edit the album down to a somewhat manageable number. It also made creating a slideshow difficult, because I couldn’t decide what to use and whether to highlight the dozens of sweet and lovely moments or to concentrate on the often comical and outrageous stuff going on throughout the day. Since everyone knows I am a sentimental mush ball, it’s an easy guess which way I leaned… so, Here is a tribute to Katie and Lauren’s wonderful celebration, to the Tracy Chapman soundtrack, “The Promise.” :

And, YES, this is a real, honest to goodness rainbow- totally appropriate for their wedding day– and Lauren and Katie were not Photoshopped into the picture! Mazel Tov, you two!!! xoxo

Lisa and Peter’s Mountain Meadows Wedding

karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer

karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer

Lisa and Peter got married last month at Mountain Meadows Lodge in Killington. I have blogged about this wonderful venue before, as it is the home of Alice, the huge Pot Bellied who struts around the property like she owns the place. Alice and her farm friends usually entertain wedding guests during the cocktail hour, milling about, looking for appetizers that might have fallen to the ground.

karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer
Since it was a wet and mostly rainy day (As was every Saturday in June this summer!), the cocktail hour was held indoors and the animals weren’t allowed. But, it didn’t keep Lisa and Peter inside all day, and we had a wonderful romantic portrait session around the grounds both before the ceremony and later in the day.

karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer
karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer
This was an intimate wedding of under 30 guests, made up of immediate family and a few close friends. It was the second time around for both Lisa and Peter, and their children were thrilled to see their parents find YOUNG LOVE in middle age. Along with their kids were also Lisa’s parents and her grand daughter, making the wedding a 4-generational celebration!

karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer

The ceremony was held under the tent, last just long enough for the couples to exchange vows, rings and and a big kiss. Then it was champagne toasts and a family-style dinner. Both the bride and the groom had their own cake, and the groom’s was paired with a beautiful tawny port.

karen pike photography vermont wedding photographerkaren pike photography vermont wedding photographer

After their destination wedding in Vermont, Lisa and Peter were heading home to Bermuda (where Vermonters would go for their destination weddings). But before going, they wanted to leave a message to all:

Here’s a slideshow recapping Lisa and Peter’s Mountain Meadows wedding. The show is in FLASH, so you’ll need to either download a flash browser for your Ipad (try Puffin in the app store. Its Free) or watch the slideshow on a laptop. (Please send all complaints to APPLE CUSTOMER SERVICE).
