2016 In review

Karen Pike photography Vermont wedding photographer Vermont portrait photographer Vermont photographer

I have heard from many people that this was a hard year, but I beg to differ! I loved 2016 and I’d like to thank all of my amazing clients (and friends!) for helping to make this year so memorable…I’ll take one minute to gush about being named as the Seven Daysie’s Best Photographer so thank you to everyone who honored me with your vote. It feels really good to know my work is appreciated!

Karen Pike photography Vermont wedding photographer Vermont portrait photographer Vermont photographer

This is that time of year that I get to post some of my favorite pictures and recognize some phenomenal companies and organizations that I work with. I have definitely shot some awesome events, starting with longtime client BCBSVT
From their yearly ad shoots to all of the amazing events they sponsor, I am definitely kept on my toes..

Karen Pike photography Vermont wedding photographer Vermont portrait photographer Vermont photographer

My favorite event of the year…
Karen Pike photography Vermont wedding photographer Vermont portrait photographer Vermont photographer

Another organization I just adore working with is the Vermont Education Health Initiative, a nonprofit health insurance trust for Vermont school employees. This year, they highlighted 30 wellness superstars from around the state and I got to travel to all corners of Vermont to do mini photo stories of the winners for the VEHI website.

Karen Pike photography Vermont wedding photographer Vermont portrait photographer Vermont photographer

I also document VEHI’s many health programs, culminating with the annual summer wellness institute- like summer camp for teachers and school support staff!

Karen Pike photography Vermont wedding photographer Vermont portrait photographer Vermont photographer

On the “Health” front, I continue to do the photography for the Vermont Health Dept and this year, we are starting to do some major website redesigns (not unveiled yet!) and new brochures and rack cards. I love all of the final results, including this new campaign for the division for the blind and visually impaired:
Karen Pike photography Vermont wedding photographer Vermont portrait photographer Vermont photographer

I have new clients this year and have loved building these new relationships. Myfavorite new ad campaign this year has to be Danform Shoes!
Karen Pike photography Vermont wedding photographer Vermont portrait photographer Vermont photographer

Each year, I do the portraiture for the incoming class of the Babson College’s Center for Women’s Entrepreneurial Leadership (CWEL). The center promotes a
diverse range of entrepreneurial leaders and encourages these young women to create economic and social value for themselves, their organizations, and society. I’m IN!!!
Karen Pike photography Vermont wedding photographer Vermont portrait photographer Vermont photographer

I also continue my work with the New England Dairy Council and one of my fave events to shoot is Breakfast on the Farm, which highlights the best of Vermont’s dairy farms…
Karen Pike photography Vermont wedding photographer Vermont portrait photographer Vermont photographer

There are so many non profits and charitable orgs. that I work with and they all do noble and necessary work to make Vermont a better place to live. Spectrum Vt, Vt Pride and Comcast Cares Day are the three I highlight below, but they are SO MANY more so please excuse me for not having room to pay homage to all!

On a very personal level, my absolute new favorite client is Queen City Bikram Yoga Studio. Marla Ceppetelli and her teaching staff have not just turned me into a Bikram enthusiast, I have come to believe that practicing these 26 postures each day, in their glorious 105 degree hot room, makes me feel happier and healthier than I ever have. That said, every picture I shoot for them is straight from the heart!

Queen City Bikram

Beyond the corporate and business world, the studio is booming and I am busy with portraits all year. I’ve culled some of my favorites together, but I love way too many to post here…

Of course, it goes without saying that I LOVE MY BRIDAL COUPLES!! Here’s a look back at these beautiful couples and my favorite proposal:

I never know what to do with those pictures that I take headed to or from an actual job, so I’ve started a greeting card line I call “MY VERMONT” and it seems to be a good outlet. These are this year’s faves:

Karen Pike photography Vermont wedding photographer Vermont portrait photographer Vermont photographer

While I love Vermont, sometimes, you just need to travel elsewhere. This summer, my wife and I visited Paris and then drove to Normandy. It was a truly magical experience (producing hundreds of images and I cant run this blog post without including some pictures that I adore:
Karen Pike photography Vermont wedding photographer Vermont portrait photographer Vermont photographer

Sometimes, I miss my old newspaper photojournalist hat, so when there’s an interesting rally or news event, I can often be found there. Trump’s visit to Burlington was too tempting to stay away and I’m glad I went. It was quite the scene and generated a huge discussion on social media, especially the image of the man in a KKK hood..

After the Orlando shooting, the Pride Center held a vigil and our beloved Bernie Sanders came to pay his respects..Karen Pike photography Vermont wedding photographer Vermont portrait photographer Vermont photographer

I am always asked what is my favorite picture and my answer is always the same…
It’s the one I will take tomorrow.

Peace and Love to you all in 2017.

Will and Ruth’s “Lady Chapel” wedding

karen pike photography Vermont wedding photographer Vermont portrait

Ruth Rebecca Jackson and William M. Graves Jr. were married Aug. 6 at the Lady Chapel, a log cabin chapel on the Graves family property in Grand Isle.

karen pike photography Vermont wedding photographer Vermont portrait

The property is beautiful… and quite old. The bible in the chapel dates back to Will’s ancestor, John Henry Hopkins (January 30, 1792 – January 9, 1868), who was the first bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Vermont and was the eighth Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church in the United States of America. Pretty impressive!

karen pike photography Vermont wedding photographer Vermont portrait

The couple met in 2009 at Rollins college in Florida, where Ruth is the administrative assistant in the modern languages and literatures department. Will received his MBA from Rollins and is a longtime supporter.

karen pike photography Vermont wedding photographer Vermont portrait

But academia took a backseat to LOVE on this beautiful Saturday morning, and family and friends gathered at this perfect little chapel to watch Will and Ruth exchange marriage vows and seal their wedding by signing the family bible.

Then it was onto the “Wedding Bells” Bungalo to cut the cake. This was a very special cottage on the property which housed many sacred and historic family items, including the Chickering piano where Will’s uncle, John Henry Hopkins, III composed the music for “I Sing A Song of the Saints of God.” In the hymnal, the music is called “Grand Isle” because he originally named the tune that in honor of his home there.

Jean and Bob’s Wedding

What do you get when you take a gorgeous couple in love, add in a slew of adorable toddlers in tuxedos and party dresses and top it off with a perfect summer day?

Bob and Jean were married on August 29 at The Vermont National County Club in South Burlington and it was nothing short of magical!

karen pike photography Vermont wedding photographer Vermont portrait

Corralling this energetic bridal party together for a portrait was no small task!
karen pike photography Vermont wedding photographer Vermont portrait

Both the bride and groom looked gorgeous in their eloquent wedding clothes and I loved Bob’s little flash of ORANGE whimsy along with his formal tux and tails:
karen pike photography Vermont wedding photographer Vermont portrait

It was so fun making portraits of this love struck couple.
karen pike photography Vermont wedding photographer Vermont portrait

Many giggles from the crowd watching this bridal procession…
karen pike photography Vermont wedding photographer Vermont portrait

…And so touching to watch Jean‘s son escort her down the aisle and “give away” the bride!
karen pike photography Vermont wedding photographer Vermont portrait

SO cute!
karen pike photography Vermont wedding photographer Vermont portrait

quite the celebratory kiss ❤️
karen pike photography Vermont wedding photographer Vermont portrait

The whole event was just beautiful, from the flowers to the food to the personal details like pictures of Bob and Jean’s children at the entrance table. Their wedding bible was a gift from Bob‘s aunt, who officiated the ceremony.

Whitney an Ryan Get Married!

karen pike photography Vermont wedding photographer Vermont portrait

karen pike photography Vermont wedding photographer Vermont portrait

Whitney and Ryan were married last month in Portland, Oregon, and I was thrilled to be asked to fly out from Vermont and photograph this celebration. The bride’s mother (Mimi) is a dear old friend and I had already shot the wedding of her oldest daughter, Helen, in 2009. When Mimi told me that Whitney was going to “Jump The Broom” with Ryan, I couldn’t wait to document the big event.

I love this picture of Mimi and Mimi’s mother, Mops, looking at Whitney after getting into her wedding dress:

karen pike photography Vermont wedding photographer Vermont portrait

Whitney looked like a princess in her gown and floor length veil. And Ryan was equally gorgeous in his 3-piece grey suit and the purple checked tie!

karen pike photography Vermont wedding photographer Vermont portrait

The couple’s FIRST LOOK at each other took place near their apartment at Laurelhurst Park.

karen pike photography Vermont wedding photographer Vermont portrait

And as lovely as the surroundings were, it paled in comparison to Whitney and Ryan’s love-soaked and happy faces when they held each other!

karen pike photography Vermont wedding photographer Vermont portrait

Now, this is LOVE!

karen pike photography Vermont wedding photographer Vermont portrait

and BEAUTY!

karen pike photography Vermont wedding photographer Vermont portrait

We made one last stop before heading to the wedding venue to show off both the couple AND city of Portland!

karen pike photography Vermont wedding photographer Vermont portrait

The wedding was being held downtown at the Adrianna Hill Grand Ballroom. We did all of the family and bridal party portraits right nearby at Pioneer Courthouse Square, affectionately known as Portland’s living room, and home of the iconic bronze Umbrella Man statue named “ALLOW ME” (Thanks, Mimi, for educating me about this!)

karen pike photography Vermont wedding photographer Vermont portrait

How Fun!

karen pike photography Vermont wedding photographer Vermont portrait

Now, onto the wedding!

karen pike photography Vermont wedding photographer Vermont portrait

It just doesn’t get prettier than this! Proud Dad (Peter) walks his little girl down the aisle…

karen pike photography Vermont wedding photographer Vermont portrait

The ceremony was officiated by Ryan’s Grandmother. So sweet!

karen pike photography Vermont wedding photographer Vermont portrait

You may now kiss!

karen pike photography Vermont wedding photographer Vermont portrait

Wahoo!! An exuberant MARRIED couple leads the recessional…

karen pike photography Vermont wedding photographer Vermont portrait

Presenting Mr. and Mrs….

karen pike photography Vermont wedding photographer Vermont portrait

Whitney and Ryan take the floor for their first dance..

karen pike photography Vermont wedding photographer Vermont portrait

OK, dad’s turn…

karen pike photography Vermont wedding photographer Vermont portrait

And a very tender moment as Ryan dances with his mother’s best friend. His mom is no longer living, but her loving presence in the room was honored with a long stem white rose, which was placed on a front row seat during the ceremony.

karen pike photography Vermont wedding photographer Vermont portrait

I love the origins of the wedding cake ritual. In medieval England, if a bride tasted the cake before the wedding, it meant the loss of the husband’s love, while a piece of cake after the ceremony ensured his fidelity! HAHA!
Furthermore, every guest must eat a small piece to ensure that the happy couple are blessed with children. BON APETITE, EVERYONE!

karen pike photography Vermont wedding photographer Vermont portrait

I had never seen this before… The Shoe Game. The bride and Groom sat back to back, each holding one of their own shoes and one of their new spouse’s shoes. the DJ asked a series of questions, and the couple then raised the correct shoe of who they each thought fit the answers best. Of course, it turned into a hilarious he-said, she-said kind of thing. VERY FUN!

karen pike photography Vermont wedding photographer Vermont portrait

What could be more fun than a CANDY TABLE, all purple of course, to match the color scheme of the wedding!

karen pike photography Vermont wedding photographer Vermont portrait

And it isn’t really a party until there’s a rumba line!

karen pike photography Vermont wedding photographer Vermont portrait

Lots of dancing and lots of kissing. I love weddings!

karen pike photography Vermont wedding photographer Vermont portrait

The party ends with Whitney and Ryan exiting through a tunnel of love…

karen pike photography Vermont wedding photographer Vermont portrait

This amazing celebration began on Friday evening with a super fun rehearsal dinner at a local park. Family and out-of-town guests gathered for great food and loads of laughter and there were so many nice pictures from the night that I had to create a slideshow just for that event! Take a look-or go right to the wedding slideshow, but note that both slideshows are in FLASH so you must watch it on a laptop as it’s not viewable to an IPHONE or IPAD (Thanks alot, Steve Jobs!)

REHEARSAL DINNER:

THE WEDDING slideshow is the largest I ever made-aout 12 minutes and over 200 images! I honestly couldn’t edit it down to less than that because the night was filled with so many extraordinary moments!
But I urge you to watch it, so sit back and relax and enjoy the show!

Jason and Larissa Get Engaged

karen pike photography Vermont wedding photographer

karen pike photography Vermont wedding photographer Vermont portrait photographer

Jason is British and lives outside of Boston. Larissa is Canadian and lives in Ottawa. And this multi-national couple chose Burlington, Vermont to become Officially engaged to marry.

karen pike photography Vermont wedding photographer

Jason contacted me about two weeks earlier, and told me that he was planning to propose to Larissa on December 14, when they were to meet in Burlington for the weekend. He explained that Vermont had become special to them both, as it is about half way between their two homes and their most frequent rendezvous spot since becoming a couple about a year ago.

karen pike photography Vermont wedding photographer

And while Larissa had already picked out a ring with Jason and it was being made, Jason decided to surprise his bride-to-be with the Dec 14 proposal and a “promise ring” and then further surprise her with a party back in Ottawa on the following night. In Jason’s words, he thought the proposal might be the only part of the wedding that he’d be allowed to plan, so he wanted it to be fun and special.

karen pike photography Vermont wedding photographer

The waterfront was Jason’s preferred location for the big event and since unpredictable winter weather needed to be factored into the plan, I suggested to him to do the actual “proposal” inside ECHO Lake Aquarium and Science Center and then we could continue the photo session outside on the boardwalk.

karen pike photography Vermont wedding photographer
The pressure was on Jason to get Larissa to visit the science center. Once there, I would follow them at a distance until Jason was ready to make his move. After the couple arrived, however, Jason was so nervous that he just discreetly took the “promise ring” from his pocket and practically whispered the proposal to Larissa. I barely saw it happen, as the couple was turned away from me, facing a large picture window!

karen pike photography Vermont wedding photographer

After making some pictures from a distance, I approached the couple and gave Larissa quite a surprise. We had a great time working our way around the museum taking pictures, including some really fun portraits inside the Exhibit: Coffee: The World in Your Cup. As it turns out, the couple spends a great deal of time visiting coffee shops and cafes together.

karen pike photography Vermont wedding photographer

The temperature was fairly mild that Sunday morning, so I was able to make additional portraits of Jason and Larissa along the Burlington waterfront. We ended the Engagement session at their favorite breakfast spot, Penny Cluse.

The following slideshow is set to Basia Bulat‘s The Shore, a favorite song of Jason and Lariissa.

Congratulations, Jason and Larissa! Have a great time planning your wedding!

Emilie and Cory

karen pike photography Vermont wedding photographer

karen pike photography Vermont wedding photographer

Emilie and Cory traveled from Quebec to Vermont to see the mountains, enjoy the outdoors AND to have an engagement portrait session while they were here. They told me that they had no Vermont connection other than they thought it would be a fun place to have pictures done.

karen pike photography Vermont wedding photographer

So, since they said that they love the outdoors and beautiful views, I took them on a whirlwind tour of some of my favorite local photo spots, starting with Oakledge Park Beach and ending at dusk at All Souls Gathering in Shelburne for a spectacular view of Lake Champlain.

karen pike photography Vermont wedding photographer

In between, we had some fun with hay bales, a barn (and a surprise Equus Photobomber) and one of Vermont’s many special covered bridges.
