Jason and Larissa Get Engaged

karen pike photography Vermont wedding photographer

karen pike photography Vermont wedding photographer Vermont portrait photographer

Jason is British and lives outside of Boston. Larissa is Canadian and lives in Ottawa. And this multi-national couple chose Burlington, Vermont to become Officially engaged to marry.

karen pike photography Vermont wedding photographer

Jason contacted me about two weeks earlier, and told me that he was planning to propose to Larissa on December 14, when they were to meet in Burlington for the weekend. He explained that Vermont had become special to them both, as it is about half way between their two homes and their most frequent rendezvous spot since becoming a couple about a year ago.

karen pike photography Vermont wedding photographer

And while Larissa had already picked out a ring with Jason and it was being made, Jason decided to surprise his bride-to-be with the Dec 14 proposal and a “promise ring” and then further surprise her with a party back in Ottawa on the following night. In Jason’s words, he thought the proposal might be the only part of the wedding that he’d be allowed to plan, so he wanted it to be fun and special.

karen pike photography Vermont wedding photographer

The waterfront was Jason’s preferred location for the big event and since unpredictable winter weather needed to be factored into the plan, I suggested to him to do the actual “proposal” inside ECHO Lake Aquarium and Science Center and then we could continue the photo session outside on the boardwalk.

karen pike photography Vermont wedding photographer
The pressure was on Jason to get Larissa to visit the science center. Once there, I would follow them at a distance until Jason was ready to make his move. After the couple arrived, however, Jason was so nervous that he just discreetly took the “promise ring” from his pocket and practically whispered the proposal to Larissa. I barely saw it happen, as the couple was turned away from me, facing a large picture window!

karen pike photography Vermont wedding photographer

After making some pictures from a distance, I approached the couple and gave Larissa quite a surprise. We had a great time working our way around the museum taking pictures, including some really fun portraits inside the Exhibit: Coffee: The World in Your Cup. As it turns out, the couple spends a great deal of time visiting coffee shops and cafes together.

karen pike photography Vermont wedding photographer

The temperature was fairly mild that Sunday morning, so I was able to make additional portraits of Jason and Larissa along the Burlington waterfront. We ended the Engagement session at their favorite breakfast spot, Penny Cluse.

The following slideshow is set to Basia Bulat‘s The Shore, a favorite song of Jason and Lariissa.

Congratulations, Jason and Larissa! Have a great time planning your wedding!

Emilie and Cory

karen pike photography Vermont wedding photographer

karen pike photography Vermont wedding photographer

Emilie and Cory traveled from Quebec to Vermont to see the mountains, enjoy the outdoors AND to have an engagement portrait session while they were here. They told me that they had no Vermont connection other than they thought it would be a fun place to have pictures done.

karen pike photography Vermont wedding photographer

So, since they said that they love the outdoors and beautiful views, I took them on a whirlwind tour of some of my favorite local photo spots, starting with Oakledge Park Beach and ending at dusk at All Souls Gathering in Shelburne for a spectacular view of Lake Champlain.

karen pike photography Vermont wedding photographer

In between, we had some fun with hay bales, a barn (and a surprise Equus Photobomber) and one of Vermont’s many special covered bridges.

A Battery Park proposal

karen pike photography Vermont wedding photographer

Alex, who lives in Burlington and Shantal, who lives in Montreal, are in love.
karen pike photography Vermont wedding photographer

On This beautiful Fall Thursday evening, Shantal arrived for the weekend from Montreal to visit Alex. At his apartment, she was greeted with a bouquet of flowers, a new dress, and a note telling her that a taxi would pick her up at 5:45 and deliver her to him.
karen pike photography Vermont wedding photographer

And while Shantal got ready for her date, Alex anxiously sat in Battery park–a ring in his pocket, sweat on his brow, and ME, lurking in the shadows and ready to photograph this HUGE event.
karen pike photography Vermont wedding photographer
The late-day sun glowed on the horizon and the waterfront view was spectacular. As with most nights in Burlington, many gathered at this popular spot to watch the sunset, so I didn’t actually look out of place with two cameras draped around my neck.
karen pike photography Vermont wedding photographer

Now, before moving forward, let me tell how Alex and Shantal come to this point in their story…

Shantal‘s best friend Katia and Alex‘s best friend Max met, got married and they moved to Montreal. For the the longest time, they tried to match up Alex and Shantal but neither of them were interested in meeting the other and starting a long distance relationship. After all, Alex lived in Maryland, and Shantal in Quebec. It would never work! Right?

But, after so much time listening to their friends talk about each other, Alex and Shantal finally relented and took a leap of faith.

First, they started to talk on the phone. And talk. And talk. Day after day and night after night, they continued talking.

Then, after countless phone calls, Alex headed to Montreal to meet Shantal.
karen pike photography Vermont wedding photographer

It took only a few more visits before it was clear that they wanted to be in each others’ lives forever.
karen pike photography Vermont wedding photographer

So, what’s a man to do? Alex moved to Vermont to be closer to his girl and to show her that he meant business.
Every weekend, Alex either went to Montreal or Shantal visited him in Burlington.
karen pike photography Vermont wedding photographer

And so, here we were… Thursday, October 2, 2014, 6:00 pm, at Battery Park:
karen pike photography Vermont wedding photographer

A bewildered Shantal arrived at he stroke of 6 o’clock, and immediately, a nervous Alex got down on one knee, held up the ring box and asked her to be his bride.
karen pike photography Vermont wedding photographer

She said YES.
karen pike photography Vermont wedding photographer

WOW! It all happened so fast (and I was trying so hard to look casual and NOT like a paparazzi) that I almost missed the whole thing!
karen pike photography Vermont wedding photographer

After a short and sweet portrait session, the sun was gone and Alex and Shantal went on to a celebration dinner at the Blue Cat Bistro and then to phone friends and family to tell them the big news.

Christy and Sadie’s E Session

karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer

The first time I photographed Christy and Sadie as a couple was in 2010 when I asked them to help me practice some new posing techniques. I posted one of the portraits on my website in the “Engagement” section and it started an avalanche of questions from the couples’ families and friends regarding their apparent secret wedding plans! Oops!

karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer

So, it is with great joy that I am posting their true, honest-to-goodness Engagement portraits here on my blog and am looking forward to photographing their wedding at the end of the month.

karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer

This is a beautiful couple- inside and out- and I believe they really are made for each other. I have loved watching them grow together over the years and know they will have a wonderful life as Mrs. and Mrs…

karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer

Both Sadie and Christy work at FAHC, are active and love to hike and bike and run, and they are VERY competitive with each other (in a fun way!)

karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer

Private and Down-to-earth, Christy and Sadie aren’t big on PDA or lots of drama and I got a kick out of their response to the FREE HUGS lady at the Burlington Farmers Market during our picture session (both Christy and Sadie passed on the offer!)

karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer

They were much more comfortable on a beach all alone, where they were free to express their love and tenderness toward each other.

karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer

Here’s a fun and (dare I say “Sexy”) slideshow from the couple’s E session a few weeks ago:

Rachael and James’ E session

karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer

karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer

Rachel and James are getting married in July and we had a chance to do some engagement portraits last week at my favorite outdoor studio! It was a big weekend for the couple, as Rachael was also graduating from UVM! We had to make due with less time than I normally like, but this couple is so cute and so in love, that is was certainly not difficult to make sweet and loving pictures!

karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer

E sessions are filled with lots of smooches and cuddles! (That’s why it’s so fun!)

karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer

I love James‘ tattoo – kind of “bad ass” and yet, it pays homage to Mother Mary. How beautiful is that!

karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer

James has a playful streak and Rachael is the more shy and reserved of the two, but together, their personalities blend into a perfect union and they balance each other nicely!

karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer

It’s hard to turn down an opportunity to play with a hula hoop! At a nearby picnic, James tests his skills for the first time with a borrowed hoop. He did awesome!

karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer

I’m so looking forward to photographing their wedding this summer. Enjoy these last weeks of planning, James sand Rachael. Your big day is soooo close…

Chris and Christine are engaged!

karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer

karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer

Chris and Christine are getting married next July and I recently took them and their sweet little dog to Clifford Pond in Starksboro for an an engagement session.

karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer

Clifford Pond is a magical place and a perfect location to do romantic portraits. I love bringing couples there for the first time and I always hope that they will find it as special as I do. So, on this perfect Fall afternoon, I encouraged Chris and Christine to bring along a blanket, some wine and cheese and just to breath in the beauty of their surroundings.

karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer

And they did.

karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer

And their dog was very grateful to be there, too!

karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer

I’m really looking forward to photographing Chris and Christine’s wedding next summer in Jay Peak, another gorgeous location that just adds to their magic!

karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer

I hope you enjoy this slideshow recapping the gorgeous afternoon at Clifford Pond….

Jenn and Abby

karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer

karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer
Yup, they are definitely a contender for the cutest couple on earth!

karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer

Jenn and Abby came to Vermont a couple of weeks ago for an intimate and private wedding- not even their trigger-happy photographer was invited! But I did spend a couple of hours with them the day before the ceremony doing an oh-so-fun engagement session!

karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer

It was, yet again, one of those picture perfect Fall days and the colors were popping. I had just been to a couple of my favorite spots around Shelburne that weekend with Kelsey and Jevin, so I knew how pretty it was looking. It made sense to revisit these picture-perfect places and see how differently they would appear to me with this new couple’s energy.

karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer

AS I knew it would, each old location took on new energy with Jenn and Abby‘s personalities and their love for each other. We started in Shelburne over by the All Souls Interfaith Gathering, then worked our way to Shelburne Orchards, and ended up on the beach at Shelburne Farms. I mean, why try and improve on a perfect recipe!

karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer

It was so much fun and I loved learning about Jenn and Abby‘s life together in Florida and their hopes and dreams for the future.

karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer

And, while we picked and ate apples (and cider donuts, of course!) they relayed to me the story of Abby’s proposal to Jenn and the YouTube video of that proposal that I couldnt wait to watch…

karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer

As if they could get ANY CUTER by showing me this video…

karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer

OMG. They DID get even cuter!

karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer

It is the SWEETEST proposal I have ever seen!

karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer

Abby, who works at a small private college, orchestrated a whole phony concert with some very talented students, had them sing all of Jenn‘s favorite songs, filled the entire auditorium with a fake audience and THEN, at the end, of the concert, a video played on stage.
karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer

Don’t worry. I’m going to show you that video. I’m just insuring that you look at all of my pictures first!

karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer

And, the event was also videotaped, so you’ll see Jenn‘s reaction at the end of the proposal.

karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer

OK, if you are now here, then you’ve definitely earned the right to see this (I may have cried!).

Congratulations, Jenn and Abby!! Come back and visit!!

Kelsey and Jevin

karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer

karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer
Kelsey and Jevin are getting married next summer and this E session was a gift from Kelsey’s mom. The couple grew up in Vermont and they are high school sweethearts. Since they dont get home very often, they really wanted the location of their engagement pictures to represent some of what’s special about Vermont. We decided on Shelburne Orhards and Shelburne Farms. I mean, you can’t get more special than that!

karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer

We had a ball at the Orchard, ate cider donuts and all left with a bag of crisp, tart McCouns and Macs. Then, it was on to Shelburne Farms to visit the animals and enjoy the peak color of foliage season.

karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer

The day wasn’t complete, until we found some remaining hay bales to play on….
karen pike photography vermont wedding photographer

It was a really nice afternoon and I hope Kelsey and Jevin love their pictures as much as I do. Here’s a fun recap of their E session, accomplanied by an old favorite of mine, “Happy Together” by the Turtles.:

April & Erin

karen pike photography vermont wedding photography

karen pike photography vermont wedding photography

April and Erin are getting married in just about one year, but they were excited to get their wedding buzz started so I recently met them at their home in montpelier to do their engagement portrait session. My favorite E sessions are when I get to tell some of their love story- including pictures from where they live and places they enjoy being together.

karen pike photography vermont wedding photography

It’s particularly fun for me to snoop around a couples’ home and photograph some of the telling little details that help narrate their lives together. With April and Erin, I learned their horoscopes, that they like to cook and love drinking coffee together in bed, that Erin loves fireflies and being barefoot, and that April likes bridges and always leaves her sox on!

karen pike photography vermont wedding photography

For Erin and April, a perfect day together might include a walk downtown with a stop at Capitol Grounds, followed by a visit to one of their favorite parks or some time on the bike path. I loved spending the afternoon with them as they introduced me to some of their special places.

karen pike photography vermont wedding photography

But the best part of doing an E session is just getting to know the couple and how they are together. Erin and April are both easy going and affectionate. They both have amazing smiles, particularly when they look at each other, so it was easy to make sweet and loving portraits. They start to nuzzle as soon as they get next to each other! Getting memorable pictures of them next June should be a piece of (wedding) cake!

karen pike photography vermont wedding photography

Here’s a fun slideshow recapping my afternoon with April and Erin. It IS in FLASH, so you’ll need to either download a flash browser for your Ipad (try Puffin in the app store. (Its Free) or watch the slideshow on a laptop. (Please send all complaints to APPLE CUSTOMER SERVICE).

NOTE ABOUT SLIDESHOW:I’ve received several emails from clients and followers lately, telling me that they cant get the music to play on any of my blog slideshows. UGH!

After doing some research, I found out that Adobe has an active bug report listed on their site for their latest version of FLASH PLAYER (version 11.7) and they will hopefully fix the issue shortly.

So, while we wait for Adobe to fix Flash Player with a NEW update, the only option, if you are using version 11.7, is to revert to Flash Player 11.6, which you can download HERE.

Sorry for the inconvenience.
