April, 2010:

Ryan and Satina

Ryan and Satina had a small and intimate wedding in Burlington a couple of weeks ago, just them and their two best friends from Texas. It was a simple but lovely ceremony outside the Echo Aquarium and Science Center, some time for portraits and then on to The Ice House for the celebratory dinner.

The couple was married in matching Black and White Converse “chucks”  and each had their favorite cake to eat-chocolate for Ryan and vanilla for Satina.  And though their tastes may vary, the day was all about their mutual love.  Just ask Ryan. The sentiment   “love endures” is reinforced in a tattoo on her arm.  So sweet!

Hangin’ with the Derby Dames

dames4-10_331 copy

Last night the Green Mountain Derby Dames took on the Maine Calamity Janes in an awesome roller derby match held at Essex Fairgrounds. About 2000 fans filled the arena for two hours of “down-and-derby” action with our hometown gals winning 98-50! I admit it- I am hooked! I ‘m a fan! I immediately came home and joined both the Derby Dames Facebook fan page as well as Star Slayer’s official page. I can’t wait until the next match; the yelling, the cheering.. I’m kicking myself for not buying a T shirt or at least a button! It was a blast!

Rather then try and narrow down the 100 plus photos I love, I just put them all into a fun slideshow to the music of THE BLACKEYED PEAS. I hope you like it as much as I do!!! As the old song from “South Pacific” goes, “There ain’t nothing like a DAME!”

(Hit PLAY on the bottom LEFT to see the whole slideshow with music, or just scroll images one at a time by clicking on arrow in the center.)

The Best Places to Work in Vermont

best169

Last Tuesday, I covered for Vermont Business Magazine the 2010 award ceremony for The Best Places To Work in Vermont. The competition was open to all for-profit and non-profit organizations with at least 15 employees working in Vermont. Best Companies Group (BCG) administered a 2-part survey to gather information about the companies who applied. Employers completed a questionnaire about HR practices, policies and benefits and then employees answered a 76-question survey on satisfaction and the quality of their working environment . The employee answers made up 75  percent of the organization’s score.  In the end, 10 small to medium sized companies and 5 large sized companies received the honors.

From 1-10, the best small companies to work for in Vermont are:

1. Wells River Savings Bank

2. Edward Jones

3. The Bank of Bennington

4. Mascoma Savings Bank

5. Seventh Generation

6. King Arthur Flour

7. NRG Systems, Inc.

8. Resource Systems Group

9. MBF Bioscience

10. TPW Management LLC

In the large company category, here are the 5 best places to work in the state:

1. Merchants Bank (my bank!)

2. Dealer.com

3. Green Mountain Power

4. Entergy Nuclear Vermont Yankee

5. Vt Electric Power Company

After an hour of schmoozing, eating yummy foods by Bon Temps Gourmet and enjoying the party atmosphere at Main Street Landing , Governor Jim Douglas joined VBM publisher John Boutin and Vermont Chamber of Commerce president Betsy Bishop to hand out the trophies. While everyone present knew their companies had won an honor, it wasn’t until the actual program that night that the attendees learned in what order the companies were ranked. So, really, it was kind 0f a nail biter, especially when it came down to Dealer.com and Merchants Bank.
