September, 2009:

Meg and Tish’s wedding

Once upon a time,  I photographed the civil union of  Tish and Meg,  just after the passing of the civil union law in Vermont.  It was monumental at the time.

Flash forward 6 years and, with the passing of the Marriage Equality law, I had the priviledge of photographing Meg and Tish’s WEDDING at the Inn at Shelburne Farms. The couple once again dressed in their civil union outfits and exchanged vows, surrounded by family and friends.

I was so proud and honored to be witnessing this ceremony and to be part of their second ceremony in Vermont. They were truly the most beautiful brides, so in love,  and such a perfect example of why all couples in love deserve to be married, regardless of gender!

2009 Firetruck Pull

On September 5, 11 teams competed in the annual Firetruck Pull on Church Street in downtown Burlington to raise money for OUTRIGHT VERMONT. Hundreds of people gathered to watch the event, which ended up raising over $16,000 for the organization! It was such a fun day and everyone was a winner just for participating! Finally, here are the highlights from the day…

Carrie and Daniel’s “explosive” wedding

Most brides will say that they saw fireworks when they kissed their groom on their wedding day, but in Carrie’s case with her new hubby Dan, I can vouch that it’s true!!

After a fabulous (though very warm!) day of exchanging vows, posing for portraits, tasting amazing food by Cloud 9 Caterers and dancing to the music of the Barrence Whitfield Band, the final celebratory surprise for the wedding couple and their guests was an explosive display of fireworks against the clear Vermont sky!

Dan and Carrie had their ceremony under a chupah on the lawn of the groom’s parents’  home and then, after ringing the cow bell to get everyone’s attention, they lead their guests on a 1/4 mile twilight walk to the tent reception at the home of their neighbors.   All of the details, from the place cards to the table decor were personal and special, created by Carrie and her family. Carrie’s dad honored his ancestry by wearing a kilt and a special birthday cake was prepared in honor of Dan’s mother.

All in all, it couldn’t have been a more “picture perfect” day! Congratulations, Carrie and Dan!

One little mishap in the evening occured when the bridal couple’s table collapsed! No stains on the dress, so everyone laughed and a new table was set for Dan and Carries and the celebration continued:

Chris and Helen’s (not so) beach wedding

The winds blew, the rain came and the tent went down!!

And along with the tent, went the hopes and plans of Chris and Helen for their beach wedding on the sandy shore of Manzanita, Oregon.  With just  hours to the ceremony, their two families banded together to reinvent the wedding at a nearby Methodist church, who’s pastor volunteered to open their doors (and function room!) to the couple.

Decorations were hung, linens were spread and the bar was stocked! And at 6 pm on September 6, Helen came down the aisle to the guests all singinig, “Going To the Chapel and I’m Gonna Get Married!”  (Did I mention that the planned music didnt work either??)

In the end, it was one of the most romantic, loving and beautiful weddings I have ever attended and it didnt matter at all that the wedding party’s flipflopped-clad feet weren’t dancing in the sand!

Claire & Cori: Vermont’s 1st legal Gay Marriage!

Claire Williams and Cori Giroux were pronounced “married ” at the stroke of midnight September 1, on the first day that Vermont’s marriage equality law went into effect. The wedding was officiated by Atty. Beth Robinson, chair of the Vermont Freedom to Marry Taskforce,  and the ceremony took place at the couple’s South Burlington home in front of about twenty close friends and members of the Vermont media.

I started out with Claire and Cori around 6 pm, when we head over to Oakledge Park for a portrait session. They had with them their gorgeous bridal bouquets, courtesy of Randi Nonni at Silver Toad Floral Design, and the light was just beautiful. We ended up at Overlook Park for some fun sunset photos and then back to their South Burlington home for a “wine and sweets” PRE WEDDING reception.

Friends filled Claire and Cori’s cozy living room for the midnight ceremony along with reporters from the Burlington Free Press, The Times Argus and Vermont Public Radio. It was short and (very) sweet and the party was over by 1 a.m. While Claire was ready to keep celebrating with her new bride, Cori, a 6th-grade school teacher,  needed to be up bright and early Tuesday morning for the first day of school!

Congratulations, Claire and Cori and CONGRATULATIONS VERMONT!!!!!
