Green Mountain Derby Dames

GMDD Season Opener: Red, White & Bruised

The Fall roller derby season started in a big way at Essex Fairgrounds Saturday night, when our own GMDD‘s GRADE A FANCY more than “bruised” the visiting GRANITE STATE derby team. The bout was the second of a double header, with the BLACK ICE BRAWLERS first taking on the Mad Rollin’ DollsTeam Unicorn from Maddison, WI. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to shoot that match so I’ll have to make it up to the Dames’ at their next match up on October 8. Sorry, ladies!!

I haves some fun moments and lots of action from the second half of the big event though, so check out this slideshow to Tom Petty’s “AMERICAN GIRL” and then visit the GMDD facebook page to see even more photos from the day. And don’t forget to get your tickets for next month’s double header on October 8th…

Kristin and David’s Wedding

How do two beautiful Roller Derby stars spend their time OFF SEASON? Well, Kristin (Green Mountain Derby Dames skater STAR SLAYER) and David (Their badass coach “DOUBLE TAKE“)
spent their time getting ready for their wedding, which I photographed on July 16! The ceremony took place at the Church Street Congregational Church and the reception followed at the Sunset Ballroom It was a beautiful wedding, in spite of the 95-degree heat, and Kristin and David looked absolutely stunning. They are the only couple I know who could pose for portraits outside with all that humidity and still look fresh and dry!

Kristin, in her long white strapless gown, let the sassy, sexy personality of Star Slayer shine through and Double Take Dave, though looking quite dashing in his Air Guard uniform, was his funny, festive self. I had a ball watching them work the room, enjoying the celebration with their family and friends and teammates. I was thrilled they asked me to shoot their wedding, as I love my role as league photographer, with my “Chick Clicker” derby alias, and have so enjoyed getting to know all of the Dames, the coaches, refs, mascots and volunteers that make this Vermont sport so inviting. If you’ve never seen a bout, the new season starts again in a couple of weeks, so definitely check them out!!!!

OK, how cute is this couple????

The definition of a beautiful bride:

Weddings are all about PDA!

Gotta LOVE those “FUN FRAMED FOTO BOOTH”. Think I have enough props??? If you’d like to see more of the FUN FRAMED FOTO BOOTH pics, check out their album on my Facebook page and copy your image for your profile photo!

I had a ball making this slideshow for Kristin and David, using a great upbeat song: Faster” by Matt Nathanson. Hope you like it!

Leigh and Mary Katherine’s Wedding

The lovely and beautiful Leigh and Mary Katherine, AKA Ivana Thump and The Atomic Muffin of Green Mountain Derby Dames Fame, shared their wedding vows on a beautiful June Saturday evening, as their family and friends (yes, many Dames and refs!) watched from picnic blankets on the lawn of the couple’s backyard.

This was a very special weddding, put together by numerous friends and family to make the day memorable. And it was; From the homemade cupcakes to the picnic baskets filled with bubbles and fireworks, to the pigroast buffet, with side dishes made by friends, to the music, hair and makeup all supplied by talented attendees. There was dancing and a bonfire and, after the day’s events, The picnic blankets would be donated to COTS and the Thumbprint Tree of all the guests’ inked prints would be framed and hung in the couple’s home. Yup, this was, indeed, a very special wedding.

This is the second Derby Duo wedding I’ve had the pleasure to photograph and I’ve loved being able to mesh my two personas as “wedding photographer” and Derby “Chick Clicker” (and I have one more this summer when Star Slayer marries one of the Dames’ coaches, so stayed tuned!)

SO, enjoy this slideshow of fun and festive photographs, to “Switchfoot”‘s awesome song, “Your Love is a Song”:

GMDD: Super Hero Slam (roller derby)

The Green Mountain Derby Dames played their last two home bouts of the winter season Saturday, taking on the Assault City Roller Derby club from Baldwinsville, NY. Both the Black Ice Brawlers and the Grade A Fancy bouts provided maximum action (and two BIG WINS!) and the crowd got totally into the whole Super Hero theme. Many fans came dressed to kill as their favorite action heroes, and, of course, our own awesome announcers, Rock Thudson and Candy Corn-ary, donned some pretty great Super Hero costumes as well!

It was a great way to end the winter season and now we can only look forward to next September when Grade A Fancy and the Black Ice Brawlers return to get their DERBY on again for us… Take a look at Saturday’s fun to Bonnie Tyler‘s, “Holdin’ On For A Hero” (remember that one???)

GMDD: Bad Reputation Bout

It was a blast from the past–80′s style to be exact–at Saturday’s double header for the Green Mountain Derby Dames at Essex Fairgrounds. The Black Ice Brawlers won their bout against The Granite State Derby Girls and though Grade A Fancy skated didn’t win against the Queen City Roller Girls from Buffalo, they skated hard and put on an awesome show for their loyal fans.

Here’s a look at Saturday’s fun to John Mellencamp‘s R-O-C-K in the U.S.A.:

Season Opener: Green Mountain Derby Dames

Saturday marked the start of the new Derby season and the GMDD got things off to a energetic start at The Essex Fairgrounds with Grade A Fancy whipping the pants off of the South Jersey Derby Girls. The Dames’ second team, The Black Ice Brawlers didn’t fare as well against the Hellions of Troy, but they played well and they were still a ton of fun to watch.

It was a sellout crowd and many who attended were “Derby Virgins”. The Beer Garden was as rowdy as ever, but the bleachers were filled with fans from 5 years to 85 years old. The team’s mascots, Paul Severe and Gang Green kept things lively off the track and announcers Rock Thudson and Candy Corn-ary were their entertaining selves throughout the day. If you’ve never experienced Roller Derby, you dont know what you’re missing. Check out my “Chick Clicker” slide show (to Pat Benatar‘s “Hit Me With Your Best Shot“) and then put March 19 down on your calendar for the GMDD’s next home turf bout!

Bruise and BOT’s Wild and wonderful wedding

What a day for Nicole and Jaime (aka Bruise Control and Notorious B.O.T. of Green Mountain Derby Dames fame). I have photographed hundreds of weddings over the years, but I have NEVER shot anything like this wedding.

Nicole wore a vintage black lace dress and Jaime donned a page boy outfit reminiscent of one worn by Pee Wee Herman! The ceremony took place in the middle of Lakeview Cemetary, the J.P. was none other than Burlington drag queen Amber Lemay and half the guests came in costume! How many weddings does one go to where the bridal procession begins with someone dressed up as a sock monkey?

The details were so fun and creative: skulls and skeletons, a bicycle-built-for-two for the bridal couple to ride off on after the ceremony, wedding rings designed with their fingerprints embossed in the bands. The reception, held at a local barn, included a penny candy table, jello shots, fake mustaches for all and Sparklers for the end of the night. And I set up a “Take Your Own Photo” studio for some extra laughs.

I love watching Jaime and Nicole together, how their eyes dance when they look at each other, how they giggle and play together. Their love is infectious, truly. When I meet a couple like this, so meant to be together, I breathe a sigh of relief that we live in a state where marriage is celebrated and embraced for everyone, regardless of their sex.

(Of course, I also curse the federal government for refusing to honor these marriages and I wonder how long it will be until all Americans really have the same rights… but I guess that’s a discussion for another day!)

Congratulations, Bruise and B.O.T., and thanks for including me in your unforgettable day!

I had so much fun making this slideshow. Enjoy…

Derby Dames vs NHRD Roller Derby

Saturday’s double bout against New Hampshire was full of drama and action. Both Grade A Fancy and Black Ice Brawlers skated their hearts out and the fans really cheered them on. Unfortuntately, New Hampshire’s SKATE FREE OR DIE and the Queen City Cherry Bombs were just a little too aggressive for our Dames, but we’ll get em’ next time!!

Derby Dames vs. Killah Bees

Win or lose, there ain’t nothin’ like a DAME!!!

Yesterday’s Green Mountain Derby Dames bout with Killah Bees was awesome and it came right down to the wire as to which team would squeek out the win. OK, so it wasn’t our Gals, but it was still a total ball to watch them skate!

Check out the action from The Essex Fairgrounds and DONT miss the next opportunity to watch them in person:

Roller Derby Brides-To-Be

I met skaters BRUISE CONTROL and NOTORIOUS B.O.T when I photographed the Green Mountain Derby Dames April Bout. BUT, two weeks later, they walked into my studio as Jaime and Nicole and asked me to shoot their wedding next September!

It has been so fun getting to know them both (AND their alter egos), but whoever they portray themselves on any given day, one thing is for sure: these women are MADLY in love. We had a ball doing their engagement session last week and I smile ear-to-ear when I look at the photos from the day–Both women are beautiful and, as a couple, they are funny, playful, sexy, tough, and have a glorious and unique view of this crazy world. I’m so happy to be part of their journey and already know that their wedding will be one of my favorites of all time!
