Lyric Theater presents “OLIVER”

event photography, Burlington, Vt

O095

Lyric Theater‘s OLIVER opened last night at the Flynn Theater and it was a truly magical night for both the audience and for the theater company. As the production photographer, it was joy to be in the audience and see the results of months of hard work by both cast and crew. The sets and costumes were gorgeous, hair and make up perfect, and the performances were practically Broadway worthy (in my opinion!)

BRAVO to artistic director Timothy Maynes, choreographer Kim Nowlan and music director Martin Hain for the work they did with this large and predominantly young cast.

O016

Lyric Theatre Company is a non-profit, all-volunteer organization celebrating its 39th season. OLIVER‘s 55-member cast includes 32 local youth and teens from 17 Vermont communities; 26 cast are new to Lyric. Jonny Barden, below, played Oliver and he rocked the house!

O021

Mr Bumble, below, was played by Jonny’s father, Tim Barden. Barden and Margaret Garofalo, as the widow Corney, perform, “I shall Scream”.

O023

Mr and Mrs Sowerberry, played by Don O’Connell and Martha Alexander, take in Oliver to help in their undertaker’s shop. They stole the show with their song, That’s Your Funeral:

16-yr-old Timothy Lewis was the Artful Dodger, and was so good, he has replaced Jack Wild as my favorite little pick pocket!

Fagan’s gang show Oliver how to get the job done.

Below: Fagan (Patrick Clow), Bill Sykes (Mark Cranmer) and Nancy (Serena Magnan O’Connell) were all so powerful, it was hard to believe this was community theater!I’m a huge fan of all of their work!

There are hundreds of pictures to view on my Karen Pike Photography Facebook page, but the following slideshow will give you a taste of the show in just under four minutes, to the memorable act 1 song, “Consider Yourself At Home” (note: the slideshow is made in FLASH, so you cant see it on your IPHONE or IPAD. Please send all complaints to APPLE CUSTOMER SERVICE.)

I loved working with this amazing team, including Production supervisor Rob Parzych and stage manager Freda Tutt. Thank you all for letting me be a part of the Lyric Theater MAGIC!

From Girls to Men: OLIVER cast members get a gender makeover!

hair024

Eight young female members of the cast of Lyric Theater‘s production of OLIVER, had their hair cut short Saturday, for their roles as boys from the workhouse and Fagin’s gang. They waited as long as possible, but with the show opening at the Flynn Theater Thursday night, it was time for them to begin their (theatrical) gender bending.

hair025

So, with family, friends and members of the production team cheering them on, the group arrived together at O’M Salon (owned by cast members Don Patrick O’Connell and Serena Magnan O’Connell) to meet the group of talented stylists who would help them transform into their male characters. They each decided to donate their “locks” to one of a handful of organizations: Locks of Love, Matter of Trust, Wigs for Kids, or Pantene Beautiful Lengths.

hair030

There was a lot of nervous laughter, a few tears, supportive hand-holding and group hugs, and in the end, the girls were all pleasantly pleased with their new moptops, pageboys and pixies.

Pet Portrait Fundraiser for Therapy Dogs of Vermont

A super fun day yesterday at a fundraiser for Therapy Dogs of Vermont, held at the Essex Veterinary Center. The event included the most amazing disc dog demonstration by SuperNova Dogworks, I donated free pet portraits sittings with all donations for Therapy Dogs, and a Vermont state Police K9 officer and his German Shepherd did a drug search and biting demo (very intense!). Essex Vet supplied hot cider, yummy snacks and lots of giveaways for the 4-legged friends attending with their family members. And, yes, there sure were loads of cute furry (and not-so-furry) friends there.

I was happy for a clear day, since I was setting up a mobile studio outside, with a backdrop hanging between two Trees! But it worked great, and I took some fun portraits of many precious pets!

Look at this gorgeous bird!

I love this portrait of a kid and his dog-such love!

OK, not a pet I’d choose to cuddle up with, but..

What a baby!

This Schnauzer just passed his test to become a therapy dog!!

This family came prepared to pose for their Christmas Card!

I wanted to sneak this pair into my camera bag and take them home…

It wasn’t easy getting this energetic pup to stay still for a photo, but with loads of help, he finally stayed put for a few shots.

So, check out the action from the Supernova Disc Dogs:

And the Biting Demo…

If you’d like to see all of the photos from this wonderful event and order enlargements, just click HERE. 10% of proceeds will also benefit Therapy Dogs of Vermont!

Congratulations to the raffle winner, which included a portrait session at my Burlington studio. I look forward to photographing your two big beautiful Black Newfies!!!

Girls on the Run 2012

Saturday was the annual end of the season 5K for Girls on The Run Vermont and the event at Champlain Valley Fairgrounds drew over 2000 participants. The 5k is a non-competitive, family-friendly event where everyone wears the Number “1″, everyone gets a medal, and everyone is a winner! How can you not love that???

Girls on the Run Vermont started 12 years ago with 15 girls. Today it’s grown to 2,500 girls and 125 schools statewide. It is part of nationwide organization with national sponsors, but my favorite corporate client, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Vermont is one of the main Vermont supporters and it is a joy for me to cover the event each year for them.

It seemed like half the marketing staff of BCBSVT came out to help with face painting and Kevin Goddard, Vice President of External Affairs, welcomed the crowd from the stage and actually took a group shot with his I phone of all 2000 plus attendees! Very cool!

So, since I’m a photographer, not a writer, and I know people are anxious to see these pictures, I will let my images do the story telling. Enjoy the slideshow!

Kentucky Derby Gala 2012

-
One of my favorite non-profits in Vermont is the Boys and Girls Club of Burlington. It is an amazing organization, with an annual enrollment of 250 full time members and serving more than 1,000 community youth and families through their outreach and activities. I love their mission: To inspire and enable community youth, especially those who need it most, and to help these kids realize their full potential. Go team!!!

I volunteer to photograph their annual winter fundraiser, ONE FASHION EVENT but , in the past, I have always had a conflict on the date of their Spring fundraiser- A Kentucky Derby Gala (and I mean GALA) held at the Barn at Lang Farm in Essex Junction. This year I was free!!

-
What a fun night, great food by Catering By Dale, an amazing silent-and live-auction ( I was outbid on a couple of items I wanted, but probably for the best!) and, of course, the Run for the Roses-the one hundred and thirty-eighth edition of the Kentucky Derby, shown three large screens!

-
The 200 attendees watched as I’ll Have Another, Going off at 15-1 odds, passed the front-running Bodemeister in the final stretch and crossed the finish line to capture the 2 million dollar prize!

-
And, along with the excitement of the race came Mint Juleps and Big Hats-Lots of BIG HATS.

-
The real highlight of the evening, and the reason why everyone was there, was a performance by kids from the Club, Singing a song about what they want to do ONE DAY. It was joyous and inspiring and, with the help of the staff and volunteers at the Boys and Girls Club, I know these kids can reach their goals and fulfill their dreams.

-
So, loads of fun and now… lots of pictures:

Photo enlargements available on my website and all proceeds from prints benefit the club, so if you see a picture you like, buy a copy!

ONE Fashion Event 2012

About 400 people came out to Higher Ground Saturday night for the annual ONE Fashion EVENT to benefit the Boys and Girls Club of Burlington. In it’s 6th year, the event featured 19 local retailers, 28 designs by children from the BGC and over 130 community volunteers. This was the third year I donated my services and once again, it was one of the highlights of my winter.

The night was nothing short of a lovefest for the organization and what it brings to the community and the children it serves. The kids were so excited to be on stage, to model their designs, and to be a part of the show. Their smiles make the whole night and every penny donated worthwhile.

I hope this slideshow captures all the great enthusiasm and energy from this event. It was such a wonderful night!

There are hundreds of photos from this event available to see and order and all proceeds benefit the Boys and Girls Club!! Click HERE to see the full photo gallery.

BGC Director Nancy Cathcart gives her thumbs up at the end of the night!

GMDD Season Opener: Red, White & Bruised

The Fall roller derby season started in a big way at Essex Fairgrounds Saturday night, when our own GMDD‘s GRADE A FANCY more than “bruised” the visiting GRANITE STATE derby team. The bout was the second of a double header, with the BLACK ICE BRAWLERS first taking on the Mad Rollin’ DollsTeam Unicorn from Maddison, WI. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to shoot that match so I’ll have to make it up to the Dames’ at their next match up on October 8. Sorry, ladies!!

I haves some fun moments and lots of action from the second half of the big event though, so check out this slideshow to Tom Petty’s “AMERICAN GIRL” and then visit the GMDD facebook page to see even more photos from the day. And don’t forget to get your tickets for next month’s double header on October 8th…

Lake Champlain Dragonboat Festival

Sunday marked the sixth annual Lake Champlain Dragon Boat Festival, celebrating the lives of cancer survivors worldwide. Ninety teams representing local businesses and organizations raced in Lake Champlain along the Burlington Waterfront in 41-foot-long dragon boats, each holding twenty paddlers and a drummer. The day long event is hosted by DragonHeartVT, a 150-member team of breast cancer survivors and supporters who paddle together for life-affirming exercise. The festival is meant not only as a fundraiser but it also sends out an inspirational message encouraging all cancer survivors to live life to the fullest after a cancer diagnosis.

Citizens Bank was the main sponsor of the event and this year, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Vermont served as the 2011 sponsor for both the Festival hat and shirts. Known for their community involvement and support for healthy initiatives, BCBSVT also formed their own team, “Rhythm and Blues” and sponsored a second team as well, “Soak It Up“, made up of staffers from Planned Action Toward Health (PATH) and school employee wellness leaders from VEHI.

I was hired to cover the festival for BCBSVT, but I also had a personal stake in the day, since my partner, Gillian Pieper, was the captain of the “SOAK IT UP” team. They weren’t the fastest group of paddlers on the Lake, but they were voted BEST CAMPSITE by the Spirit Judges!

At noon, a traditional flower ceremony was held, when the breast cancer survivor teams honored those who have died. It was a moving tribute and a reminder that we must keep working to find a cure for this disease which touches so many. This year, Dragonheart Vermont is raising money to establish Survivorship NOW. Survivorship NOW will provide cancer survivors with resources, tools, and support to enhance their recovery after their medical treatment is completed.

I hope you enjoy this slideshow of photos from the Festival, to the all appropriate Melissa Etheridge song, “I Run For Life”:

Keybank VT City Marathon 2011

It just doesnt get more fun than this! This year, instead of my usual Sunday-of-Memorial Day Weekend-wedding, I was hired by Keybank to photographed the Vermont City Marathon. It was eight hours of rain, wind, heat, sun, hills, puddles and lots of running… and I had the time of my life! By the end of the day, I had shot almosty 2000 images and I spent the last two days, editing that down to a much more presentable 800! While those 800 photos ARE available to see and order in a gallery on my website (see link at the end of this blogpost) Here is a great sample of the day in a slide show to the appropriate song, Long May You Run by Neil Young:
