She glances at the photo, and the pilot light
of memory flickers in her eyes.

~Frank Deford

When your wedding day is over, your two most precious gifts will be the memories you hold in your heart and the photographs you hold in your hands. Choosing your photographer is one of the most important decisions you will make. You want someone who not only makes beautiful and memorable images, but also who understands your personality and your vision for your wedding day. It’s important to ask me lots of questions. I encourage you to meet me in person so we can get to know each other and develop a relationship before the wedding. By the time your special day arrives, I want you to feel totally comfortable and safe in my hands.

All of my wedding packages include an engagement portrait session. This is a wonderful way for me to get a feel for how best to photograph you, and it’s time well spent together. Just as I do with all of your wedding photos, I post your engagement portraits online for you to share with family and friends. Of course, you also receive a CD with all of the best images from the photo shoot-- toned, high resolution and ready for print.

Of course, my talent is photography, but I am also a wealth of information on lining up many of your wedding details. After all, I photograph dozens each season and have seen a lot over many years in the business. So, pick my brain. I am always an email or phone call away.

Karen's Professional History and Associations

For 20 years, I worked as a newspaper photographer and photo editor for the Tampa Tribune, Boston Herald and Burlington Free Press. In 2001, I left to start my own full service photography business, specializing in weddings and other life-cycle events. I also have a large commercial client list and I continue to maintain my photojournalistic edge by doing regular assignments for the New York times and Vermont's many community newspapers. Recent Book Projects Include: “America At Home," to be published in March, 2008; A photo Biography of Vermont artist Stephen Huneck called “The Life of Stephen Huneck,” published in 2004; America 24/7,” published in November, 2003; Ongoing documentary of homeless children of Kathmandu, Nepal, being used as educational curriculum nationwide by the Rising Child Foundation.

I am a member of Vermont Professional Photographers, Vermont Association of Wedding professionals, Professional Photographers of America and National Association of Photoshop Professionals. I make it a point to attend at least 2 conferences a year and I am always studying new lighting techniques and album design. I am committed to staying sharp and up to date on the latest technology, software and innovations in the wedding industry. My job is to bring as much information as possible to help make your wedding photographs both technically and aesthetically beautiful.

I no longer have time to enter contests. My accolades and awards now come from my clients and the fact that they are always referring me to new clients. That’s the greatest prize of all and I am very proud of that. I also regularly receive calls from former wedding couples who now want me to photograph their babies! I look forward to lifelong relationships with all of my couples and hope that one day I can even photograph some of their children’s weddings!

Personal Info

I am joined in Civil union (or is it civilly united?) to my partner, Gillian, and we have three kids, three dogs and a country home near Burlington, Vermont. The dogs are easy. The teenagers are exhausting! During our down time, we like to cross country ski and snow shoe, watch old movies and play scrabble. I am a pretty big fan of marriage and family!

Equipment & Technical Info

I am a Nikon enthusiast and a loyal member of Nikon professional services. My main camera is the state-of-the-art Nikon D2X, a super fast, 12-megapixel camera with spot on focusing and color balance,  so images are sharp and skin tones are beautiful. My second camera is a D300, another technological marvel with all of the latest bells and whistles and equally as fast. I use very fast lenses, from super wide to telephoto, so that I can really vary the kinds of images I make for you throughout your wedding day. I like to shoot with as much available light as possible, filling in the shadow detail and balancing the ambient light with Nikon SB800 handheld flash units.

I also always travel with full studio lights, extra camera bodies and lenses, lots of batteries and memory cards, a laptop and, of course, my endless creativity and passion for photography!

Albums

Though there are many options available, My clients seem to gravitate to one of three styles, depending on personality and budget: Asuka Prepress albums, The Legend Series flush-mount coffee table album and White Glove First Edition Photography books. I have samples of all of these albums to show you if we meet and you can get a sense of the album styles in the slide shows provided on this page.
